The Best Blogging Platforms on the Web

A blog, without any doubt, can transform a simple and common individual into instant artist, critic, businessman, and celebrity. A blog has the power to disseminate, spread, and broadcast an idea to any location through the Internet. Because of the countless blogging platforms available on the Web, people become more and more interested in creating a blog that will represent them.

There are actually at least over a hundred blog platforms on the Web. Some of them offer their services for free, while some require paid registration. Other blogging platforms are owned and powered by big Internet companies, while some are maintained by a small support team.

Blogger or Blogspot – the most popular

Powered by Google, this popular blog platform offers an easy, instant set-up process, free blog templates and widgets, up-to-the-minute site stats, and Google AdSense. A blog on Blogger is also capable of supporting up to a hundred users, allowing a blog to expand single editorship with ease.

WordPress – everybody’s favorite

WordPress may be second to Blogger in terms of popularity, but the former is hailed by popular bloggers around the world as their preferred blogging platform. WordPress has a vast community of independent web developers creating artistic and classy templates for them. The blogging platform currently allows users to create blogs two ways: WordPress.com is a web hosting service that supports user-created blogs for free, while WordPress.org provides users with a free blogging software or content for use with a paid webhost. The main attraction of WordPress.com blogs is the free inclusion of an Akismet plugin, which checks visitor comments against the Akismet to determine the comment’s authenticity.

TypePad – the carefree blogging platform

TypePad is a paid blogging platform that limits the user’s capacity to design his or her blog because of a blog script installed on the user’s main server. Despite this limiting feature, many bloggers still use TypePad because TypePad blogs typically require less maintenance and coding system knowledge compared to blogs on other platforms.

Posterous – the email buddy

Posterous, a popular micro-blogging service today, provides solutions for common blogging problems like the inability to sign into the blog interface due to server downtime and defective publishing areas. Posterous allows users to publish text posts, photos, and music through email. The use of Posterous can also be integrated with the use of sites like Twitter and Facebook.

Tumblr – the updater

Founded in 2007, Tumblr pioneered the fusion between blogging and short message updating. This blog platform is for people who treat blogging as a hobby or a pastime, and not for those who want to use blogs for serious moneymaking ventures.

Weebly – the widget-based platform

Weebly is an online website creator that helps users easily create websites with multiple pages. The platform allows building of website pages through a ‘drag and drop’ feature. Users can choose and rearrange visible page elements according to their preferences. Weebly currently offers no bandwidth restrictions.

RSA: Security versus security products

I’ve been in back-to-back meetings at the RSA Conference which limits my time for blogging. Here is my brain dump for the day:

1. The focus of RSA seems to be on cloud and mobile security. I get that these are hot areas with lots of marketing buzz but I have two problems here: 1) Mobile security technology is relatively easy but the weird triangulation between a user, an organization and a creates some interesting dynamics. Do I buy mobile security from my mobile carrier? If I do, has does the corporate security group get engaged? Do I really want my company putting security software on my personal device? I’m not sure how this will be solved but suffice it to say that this is different than my corporate PC. 2) I understand that we have to make the cloud secure before we will really embrace this model but let’s face it, existing IT infrastructure isn’t secure. Why aren’t we talking about securing this first?

2. RSA is mostly about security products, not security. I know, it’s a money thing but I wish we would highlight more about use cases, reference architectures, and and less about the latest security widget.

3. HP and IBM are way more focused on security than most people think. HP now considers security one of its five top business initiatives and IBM has created a virtual security group headed by Steve Robinson with its own P&L. Both companies can address what I call “big security” use cases like securing networked business processes, creating IT risk management best practices, or dealing with cyber security issues at critical infrastructure organizations. How many other security vendors at RSA can do this? Less than 5.

4. Speaking of HP, the company is talking about a vision that merges ArcSight with HP operations software for further improvements to both IT service management and security automation. Cool stuff. If this takes off, it will be the exclusive domain of a handful of companies. BMC could play but it needs a security portfolio. CA could play but it needs a better security portfolio. Attachmate may be a wild card here with NetIQ and Novell.

5. There are a number of threat reports available and most are . That said, Blue Coat Networks did a great job of presenting its web threat report yesterday. Very insightful and a worthwhile read.

6. Another buzz area is virtualization security but this one is more real to me than others. Why? Virtualization security is pretty elementary today, based mostly on physical safeguards. While vendors are announcing virtual security products they need to focus on education before they jump into technology. ESG Research indicates that security professionals lack virtualization knowledge and models for server virtualization security. Until they gain this knowledge they won’t buy security tools. Time to teach the market how to fish.

7. When I think of security vendors, I almost never think of Barracuda Networks but I have to give it credit for its manufacturing and distribution skills. Someone is buying these gateways.

Forrester: SaaS Won’t Succeed With Some Apps

Given all the hype SaaS (software as a service) has garnered, you might be inclined to think every category of software will be delivered predominantly from the cloud at some point. Not so, says a new Forrester Research report.

In fact, SaaS will only be “a disruptive force” in software categories that account for about a quarter of global software spending and will have “little or no effect” on many of some 123 market segments studied, Forrester analysts Liz Herbert and Andrew Bartels write.

SaaS faces major obstacles in four broad sectors of software. They include lower-level elements of the stack, such as operating systems and databases; software for internal IT management and data management; “legacy, entrenched process applications”; and vertical applications, such as a securities transaction processing system, Forrester said.

Such systems make up 40 percent of all software spending and the reasons they’ll stay mostly in-house — security concerns, existing infrastructure investments, the need to tightly integrate with other applications — are “pretty obvious,” Forrester’s report states.

But SaaS is making inroads in mature application areas such as SCM (supply change management), particularly when the customer hasn’t already purchased such functionality from an on-premises vendor, it adds.

Meanwhile, SaaS is starting to shake things up in areas like CRM (customer relationship management) and human resources, where it is replacing on-premises systems. SaaS is also making some inroads in GRC (governance, risk and compliance) and application development, Forrester added.

In still other categories, SaaS is now “ model for software sales and delivery,” the report states. Those include e-purchasing, expense reporting tools and blogging and wiki platforms.

Still, products where SaaS has taken hold of at least 50 percent of revenue amount to only 3 percent of the total software market, Forrester said.

The report’s final category focuses on software types where SaaS vendors are essentially the only ones in the game. This tends to be the case for fairly new types of applications, with examples including compensation management, services procurement and trade management, according to Forrester. The emergence of variants has also given SaaS vendors who sell them a chance to mature while legacy players catch up, the report adds.

There are clear and long-standing reasons why large software vendors have been slower to embrace SaaS, chief among them the lucrative and predictable streams of revenue provided by annual support fees for on-premises software.

SaaS, in turn, is typically billed on a subscription basis and is generally considered easier for a customer to migrate away from than an on-premises product, a situation compounded by the fact that many SaaS contracts are year-to-year.

Still, the likes of SAP and Oracle are now moving quickly to bring more SaaS products to market, particularly for their largest customers.

SAP is planning to deliver a series of add-on SaaS extensions for its Business Suite software, while Oracle has said its upcoming Fusion Applications will be available in SaaS form if customers desire.

Linux News: Community: Who Are This Year’s Free Software Heroes?

Part of what makes the free and software community so awe-inspiring is that countering all the negative forces on software freedom each and every day are countless positive forces, contributing, enabling and chipping away at the FUD.

It is just such people who are ideal candidates for the 13th annual Awards, of course, nominations for which are now being accepted by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) and the GNU Project.

Aiming to recognize individuals who have made “a great contribution to the progress and development of free software, through activities that accord with the spirit of free software,” the Award for the Advancement of Free Software was given last year to John Gilmore for his work in network security .

Who should be recognized this year? Linux bloggers had no shortage of ideas.

“Charles Oliver Nutter,” suggested David Masover, a Slashdot blogger. “For JRuby and for how helpful he’s been with Ruby questions, whether or not they involve JRuby.”

While the FSF’s Award for the Advancement of Free Software is open only to individuals, its Award for Projects of Social Benefit focuses on projects. Targeting that second group, Github was Masover’s second suggestion.

“While their own code contributions have been relatively modest, distributed version control dramatically lowers the barrier of entry to contributing to a project, and Github makes that even easier,” he noted. “Seriously, you see an interesting open source project, you can click a button to fork it. There’s also their heroic effort to rescue the works of Why The Lucky Stiff.”

Alternatively, for the FSF’s individual award, Jody Goldberg was the suggestion of Chris Travers, a Slashdot blogger who works on the LedgerSMB project.

“The Gnumeric spreadsheet is the best spreadsheet I have ever used,” Travers explained. “It is extremely full-featured, robust and solid, and the import/export formats are better than Excel.”

In fact, “the few tests I have seen putting Gnumeric and Excel head-to-head have suggested that Gnumeric is the better program by any objective measure,” he added.

Two other possibilities that came to mind for Travers were Tom Lane and Josh Berkus.

“While it isn’t copyleft, the BSD-licensed PostgreSQL RDBMS is a real competitor to MS SQL, DB2 and Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) on the mid-range,” he pointed out. “Of the Free Software projects in this area, it is easily the best. Tom Lane has done extremely well at leading the development of this project and Josh Berkus has been an exceptional advocate.”

Then again, “I suggest Pamela Jones and friends for their tireless work on Groklaw countering FUD thrown against Free software,” consultant and Slashdot blogger Gerhard Mack chimed in.

Barbara Hudson, a blogger on Slashdot who goes by “Tom” on , also zeroed in on the legal realm.

“I have to nominate Google,” she told Linux Girl. “Oracle and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) are tag-teaming to try to destroy Android through the courts, while Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Apple are attacking Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) over unencumbered video formats.

“Additionally, Google told the Department of Justice to keep their mitts to themselves when the DoJ wanted to paw through the logs from the wireless sniffing episode, and made it stick,” she explained. “That’s got to be good for some bonus points.”

It’s just possible that “the companies attacking open source in the courts wouldn’t be as threatened by free software if they devoted more resources to innovation, and less to litigation,” Hudson mused. “As it stands, the only ‘win-win’ is, as always, the lawyers on both sides.”

Linus Torvalds was the first suggestion of Hyperlogos blogger Martin Espinoza: “It is hard to conceive of a world in which he doesn’t already have one, but we appear to live in it,” Espinoza explained. “I can’t imagine anyone who doesn’t have one who deserves one more.”

Next in line, “I would nominate Dries Buytaert, the unifying force behind Drupal, which is turning out to be the right or at minimum chosen solution for a truly vast range of websites,” Espinoza added.

“Drupal has a highly community-involved model, and the user base really has the option to help steer Drupal through its website,” he pointed out. “The community has everything from international release parties to ongoing dialogue — in other words, it is an actual community.”

For Slashdot blogger hairyfeet, “the one who is most deserving by miles is Mark Shuttleworth because he is the ONLY one that is actually trying to make a functional desktop for normal people,” hairyfeet told Linux Girl.

Of course, “Free Software is a cooperative product of the world,” blogger Robert Pogson pointed out. “No individual owns it or owns leadership of it.”

Accordingly, “you could nominate a 6-year-old child for exhibiting unimaginable joy using GCompris or IBM (NYSE: IBM) or Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) for leading business to adopt FLOSS,” he concluded. “Everyone who uses FLOSS and shows it to others not so blessed should receive the award. How about the geeks keeping connectivity in Cairo?”

Windows fix on Patch Tuesday ‘breaks’ VMware software

VMware is telling customers that two Windows 7 security patches have left the VMware View desktop virtualization client unable to access the View Connection Server, which brokers the connection between a user’s computer and a virtual desktop.

This led Gartner virtualization analyst Chris Wolf to write a titled “Windows 7 Update Breaks VMware View Client” that says this week’s event is “an important lesson in BYOD” deployments that let workers bring their own devices to work.

Desktop virtualization products such as VMware View store a user’s desktop, complete with and applications, on a server in the data center, and a user accesses the virtual desktop remotely from a client application running on a PC, potentially their own PC.

CONTENTIOUS: Microsoft’s top 12 rivals

While it’s not clear how widespread the problem is, Wolf fears that it could portend huge IT management headaches in the future.

“For organizations planning BYOD scenarios, this week’s Windows 7 patch issue should make you consider the potential for a large-scale break created on Patch Tuesday,” Wolf writes. “If we fast forward a couple of years, it’s possible for an IT organization to have to deal with remediating this type of problem for thousands of users.”

VMware is Microsoft’s chief rival in the virtualization market, and has argued that its own software is making Windows less important over time. But this week’s event shows just how much VMware relies on Microsoft software, since its core business is to run virtualized instances of Windows servers, desktops and applications.

A VMware support article says the connection problems occur for users who have installed patches released by Microsoft in the monthly Patch Tuesday, one of the IT security world’s most widely watched events.

Users who have already installed the patches can either upgrade the View client or uninstall the Microsoft patches, VMware said. Those who have not yet installed the patches should delay doing so until they have installed the latest version of VMware View Client.

Users may have installed the Microsoft patches without any manual effort since, “having Windows Update automatically apply new patches is considered a ” for user-owned PCs, Wolf writes.

While hosted virtual desktops have numerous benefits, such as improved security, business continuity and efficiency in deploying new desktops and applications, the VMware View client problem illustrates that bring-your-own-PC scenarios result in a loss of some control for IT, Wolf notes.

“Since we’re giving up some aspects of change management with BYOD, these types of problems are inevitable,” Wolf writes. “Contingency planning, remediation testing, and training that may also include patch distribution through personal e-mail is an essential, but sometimes overlooked aspect of deploying BYOD solutions. Organizations that are fixing broken VMware View connectivity on user-owned Windows 7 devices are learning that lesson the hard way.”

Cloud Computing IBM’s Edge

International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) announced new partnerships with leading companies and institutions for providing cloud computing solutions.

IBM’s LotusLive public cloud service is helping clients by providing integrated email, web conferencing, and social networking and collaboration services. This improves the day-to-day business functioning and efficiencies and helps in developing innovative ideas much faster.

According to the research group IDC, worldwide spending on cloud services is expected to grow almost threefold, reaching $44.2 billion by 2013. Enterprise spending remains robust, with manifold growth expected in cloud computing space, within a very short span of time.

Small and medium size businesses (SMB) are also rapidly adopting cloud computing technologies to improve their IT systems management at a lower cost.

IBM and Cloud Computing

IBM has been one of the key companies supporting the concept of cloud computing from the very beginning. In 2010, IBM launched of a formal Cloud Computing division.

Most of the existing clouds are built on IBM-supplied infrastructure—either in the form of hardware components or so-called midware. In 2010, IBM announced the release of systems software for Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud.

IBM remained focused on developing its cloud offerings through acquisitions. In 2010, IBM acquired Sterling Software, a provider of e-commerce software. IBM also acquired Cast Iron Software to gain access to middleware for integrating cloud computing services. In the recent past, IBM’s Cognos, Websphere, DB2 and Rational software offerings have all been made available via the cloud.

New Partnerships

IBM announced partnerships with Ariba and SugarCRM. IBM will be providing social commerce and customer relationship management (CRM) to these companies.

SugarCRM, a leading provider of CRM software, is integrating LotusLive into its customer relationship management application. The combined offering is expected to help the company in reaching potential customers in an easier way and within a very short span of time.

Ariba will integrate LotusLive into its Ariba Discovery service. This will improve collaboration between buyers and sellers through web conferences, online chats, and sharing documents, resulting in improved communications and faster decision making. The service is expected to be available from the first half of 2011.

Increasing Global Reach

A number of global organizations have adopted IBM’s cloud computing solutions. This includes organizations such as Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), C&D Foods, Crawford & Company, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, General Motors Components Holdings LLC and General Milling Corporation.

General Motors Components Holdings LLC (GMCH), a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors (GM), is using LotusLive to provide employees with cloud-based email, calendar and contact management services. GMCH has also purchased LotusLive Connections to facilitate social networking and collaboration between employees in the Cloud.

Similarly, Ireland-based C&D Foods adopted LotusLive iNotes, to shift its employees at their canning facility in the Netherlands from Microsoft Exchange, in a quicker and cost-.

Philippines-based General Milling Corporation (GMC), adopted LotusLive’s complete collaboration suite to provide its employees with cloud-based email and advanced collaboration tools.

Our Take

IBM remains a heavyweight in the cloud-computing market. The company posted a strong fiscal 2010 results and ended the year with a cash balance of $11.65 billion. We believe this strong cash balance will help IBM acquire companies with high (IP), which will drive further growth in the upcoming quarters.

However, IBM faces strong competition from Oracle Corp. (ORCL), Hewlett Packard Co. (HPQ), Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and EMC Corp. (EMS) in the cloud computing market.
